Final Work of Art
Artist Statement
I was inspired by the Blue Panel by Ellsworth Kelly in the NC Museum of Art collection. This painting inspired me because it was so simple, yet the way it is positioned makes you look at it because it's not perfectly straight with the wall. So I decided that I wanted to make something that would make people look at it, all while keeping it simple. When deciding what colors to use, I was inspired by the brightness of the blue panel. I wanted to use bright colors, but I didn't want the colors to be overpowering or clash with each other. This is how I came up with the idea of doing a gradient, so the colors start out really light but get brighter/darker farther down the canvas so it's not too much to take in at once. I was also inspired by the way the canvas was positioned because it is diagonal and a little off-center. This is kind of where I got the idea to lay the canvases on a piece of wood. I wasn't too concerned about having the canvases perfectly lined up, because the original piece I was inspired by isn't perfectly lined up either. And that is how the Blue Panel inspired me to make this work of art.
3 Pieces of Evidence:
The first picture is when I first started out by painting the yellow canvas.
The second picture is the three canvas laid side by side while I was trying to figure out what order they look best in.
The last picture is some colors I was trying to mix to paint the pink and green canvases.
